With New Years almost here, now is the perfect time to revamp your training, motivation, and running goals! The December issue of Runner’s World features a great article, “This is the Year I Will…” and Fleet Feet Sports is here to help you achieve these goals. Here’s Runner’s World list & how we can help you make it happen.
This is the Year I Will…
1. Race Farther
How Fleet Feet can help you make it happen:
Join one of our training groups & get yourself motivated for the 2012 race season. Whether you are a beginner or seasoned runner, we have a program that will help you reach your race goals this year:
- NoBoundaries 5K: 1st group run is Tuesday, January 31st, at 6:30pm at Fleet Feet Northfield. Training is geared toward the 5K at the Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon on May 19th.
- 10K/Half Marathon: First group run is Wednesday, February 1st, at 6:30pm at Fleet Feet Northfield. Training is also geared toward the 10k/Half Marathon event at the Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon on May 19th.
Registration for both training programs opens December 26 at 8am.
2. Try Yoga
Compliment your running with some good stretches for total body & mind health. There are yoga classes designed for runners specifically, but all beginners should start with any class with the terms hatha, gentle, or level 1.
3. Lose 10 Pounds for Good
- Include protein in every meal
- Eat a meal within an hour after running
- Don’t skip meals
- Stay hydrated, before, during, and after running
- Eat food, don’t drink it
- Run from fast food
- Eat only when you’re hungry. Eat smaller portions at meals.
4. Be More Consistent
Consistency in training, work outs, and sleep. Keep your body on a schedule and stick to it. Keep a running journal or log to record all your work outs. Also, don’t forget the importance of consistent sleep. It helps fuel not only our bodies, but also our minds, creating the best scenario for successful training & living.
5. Try a Triathlon
How Fleet Feet can help you make it happen:
Stop in and speak to one of our triathlon gurus while you get fit for the proper gear. Our Northfield store has triathlon apparel and we also rent wet suits. Closer to Pepper Pike? Give us a call and we’ll bring everything you need and need to know to our Pepper Pike location for you.
6. Win a Medal
Some secrets to increasing your medal wearing chances: choose a race that puts you in a 5-year age division, rather than 10-year; compete on weekends with multiple races in your area; and pick the events that aren’t well publicized. Combine these “cherry-picking” tactics with consistent training and hard work and you should be well on your way to your medal-wearing days!
7. Try Trail-Running
How Fleet Feet can help you make it happen:
Fleet Feet Northfield offers a trail run every Sunday along the tow-path. Check our Facebook page weekly for the group run to be posted. Sunday Morning the location will be posted and the group will go for a fun trail run. Add it to your weekly runs this year.
8. Stop Giving Up
This year make it a point to not give up on yourself. Skipping work outs? Set your work out clothes the night before as a friendly reminder to hit the gym in the morning. Visualize yourself achieving your goals and hitting that goal pace mile after mile. Mentally seeing yourself do something makes it easier to actually achieve it. All about power of the mind.
9. Figure Out My Watch
How Fleet Feet can help you make it happen:
Bring in your Garmin, Timex, or Nike GPS Sport Watch and one of our team members can answer any questions you may have. Want a new GPS watch to keep you motivated this year? We carry those 3 brands and would love to help you pick out the perfect running mate!
10. Give Back to the Sport
How Fleet Feet can help you make it happen:
Volunteer at a race! Hand out water! Let us help you find a place to volunteer! Give back to the sport that has given you so much!
11. Find More Partners
How Fleet Feet can help you make it happen:
Join one of our weekly group runs! Group runs are held Monday at 6:30pm from the Pepper Pike store, and Wednesdays at 6:30pm at the Northfield store. Join us for a fun and easy 5 miles–all abilities are welcome!
12. Beat My PR
Make a gradual buildup for only one or two race distances. Avoid making your workout routine over the map. Then pick two races in spring and two races in fall to increase your chances of achieving at least one PR. Work on developing leg strength with hill running, and core strength with core exercises. Speed work with intervals and improved fitness with recovery days are all important steps to beating your PR.
