If you like to know every detail about your training, especially your tri training, you gotta check out Garmin’s new 910XT.

The new 910XT is an all-in-one GPS enabled device that takes your training to a whole new level.

The 910XT is designed for open water and pool swimming. The 910XT is Gamin’s first multisport watch to offer swim distance, stroke identification, stroke count and pool lengths, and it also computes your *SWOLF Score to help gauge your swimming efficiency.

The 910XT makes it easy and seamless to transition between sports. The auto multisport feature lets you switch sport modes with just one button press. An optional quick release mount allows you to move the 910XT easily from wrist to bike.

Advanced training
The 910XT is compatible with ANT+™ sensors, including the optional speed/cadence sensor for cycling or premium heart rate monitor (included with some models). The 910XT can be paired with an existing ANT+ heart rate monitor or purchase as an accessory. Track your weight, body fat, body water and six other measurements when using the 910XT with the Tanita BC-1000 body composition scale.
Source: Garmin website

*SWOLF is derived from combining the terms “swimming” and “golf.” The SWOLF data field on the Forerunner 910XT adds together the time and the number of strokes it takes to swim a pool length . For instance, 30 seconds and 10 strokes to swim the length of a pool will equal a SWOLF score of 40. A lower score is better, just as in golf.
Source: Garmin Support

The Garmin 910XT is in-stock and waiting to help you analyze every stroke, pedal and step. Visit your nearest Fleet Feet Sports Cleveland.

Compliment your running with some good stretches for total body & mind health. There are yoga classes designed for runners specifically, but all beginners should start with any class with the terms hatha, gentle, or level 1.

3. Lose 10 Pounds for Good

Include protein in every meal

Eat a meal within an hour after running

Don’t skip meals

Stay hydrated, before, during, and after running

Eat food, don’t drink it

Run from fast food

Eat only when you’re hungry. Eat smaller portions at meals.

4. Be More Consistent
Consistency in training, work outs, and sleep. Keep your body on a schedule and stick to it. Keep a running journal or log to record all your work outs. Also, don’t forget the importance of consistent sleep. It helps fuel not only our bodies, but also our minds, creating the best scenario for successful training & living.

5. Try a Triathlon
How Fleet Feet can help you make it happen:
Stop in and speak to one of our triathlon gurus while you get fit for the proper gear. Our Northfield store has triathlon apparel and we also rent wet suits. Closer to Pepper Pike? Give us a call and we’ll bring everything you need and need to know to our Pepper Pike location for you.

6. Win a Medal
Some secrets to increasing your medal wearing chances: choose a race that puts you in a 5-year age division, rather than 10-year; compete on weekends with multiple races in your area; and pick the events that aren’t well publicized. Combine these “cherry-picking” tactics with consistent training and hard work and you should be well on your way to your medal-wearing days!

7. Try Trail-Running
How Fleet Feet can help you make it happen:
Fleet Feet Northfield offers a trail run every Sunday along the tow-path. Check our Facebook page weekly for the group run to be posted. Sunday Morning the location will be posted and the group will go for a fun trail run. Add it to your weekly runs this year.

8. Stop Giving Up
This year make it a point to not give up on yourself. Skipping work outs? Set your work out clothes the night before as a friendly reminder to hit the gym in the morning. Visualize yourself achieving your goals and hitting that goal pace mile after mile. Mentally seeing yourself do something makes it easier to actually achieve it. All about power of the mind.

9. Figure Out My Watch
How Fleet Feet can help you make it happen:
Bring in your Garmin, Timex, or Nike GPS Sport Watch and one of our team members can answer any questions you may have. Want a new GPS watch to keep you motivated this year? We carry those 3 brands and would love to help you pick out the perfect running mate!

10. Give Back to the Sport
How Fleet Feet can help you make it happen:
Volunteer at a race! Hand out water! Let us help you find a place to volunteer! Give back to the sport that has given you so much!

11. Find More Partners
How Fleet Feet can help you make it happen:
Join one of our weekly group runs! Group runs are held Monday at 6:30pm from the Pepper Pike store, and Wednesdays at 6:30pm at the Northfield store. Join us for a fun and easy 5 miles–all abilities are welcome!

12. Beat My PR
Make a gradual buildup for only one or two race distances. Avoid making your workout routine over the map. Then pick two races in spring and two races in fall to increase your chances of achieving at least one PR. Work on developing leg strength with hill running, and core strength with core exercises. Speed work with intervals and improved fitness with recovery days are all important steps to beating your PR.

I was recently inspired by a customer. She and her husband had a marathon bucket list. Their goal: to run a marathon (or half) in every state. I’m a travel bug and find it necessary to leave Cleveland at least once a month, so naturally her story sparked my interest. They had done about 20 something thus far and I was curious to know which had been her favorite. So far, it had been a smaller marathon in Utah. It was more of a trail marathon, as she found herself running through the gorgeous mountains there. She said the biggest difference was that there weren’t many spectators along the way, but that was also one of the best parts.

Her description of the setting (particularly the mountains) made me long for that inner peace that comes with finding yourself in nature. Typically I just run the roads, but I definitely ventured to the Metroparks for my run that day. Although, Cleveland is lacking in the mountain department, we are definitely blessed with an amazing set of parks that we should all remember to appreciate.

But why limit ourselves to only our hometowns? A marathon in every state has officially become my dream. I have my whole life ahead of me and millions of miles to travel, so there is no rush to this goal, but 2012 will be year one (even if it’s only Ohio).

And as I was browsing Runner’s World website this morning, I discovered my ultimate marathon: Jungfrau: “the world’s most gorgeous marathon.” Nothing like a good 26.2 mile run through the Swiss Alps. Check out Runner’s World’s slideshow of it here. But here’s a little taste of what to expect.

One of my favorite pictures taken from Jungfrau's posted pictures of the 2011 race

Sign me up please. One day.

Keep logging my miles OUTSIDE? In a Cleveland winter?! Are you out of your mind? ….Nope!

For me, winter miles are among my favorite. There is something about that fresh crisp air slightly stinging your cheeks that helps me push through that extra mile. The icicles on the trees shimmer with each passing step and the sparkling white blanket covering the Earth comforts me. Not to mention, I can actually breathe (goodbye spring/summer allergies!). Besides, I’m not exactly the kind of person that can ever sit still, or stay inside–but who is?!

Not sharing my enthusiasm yet? You will. Digest these 5 winter tips & discover the beauty of sharing your favorite routes with each falling snowflake.

1. BE SEEN! Who said bright colors were only for spring? Whip out those bright oranges, pinks, greens, and all other neons you’re hiding in your closet. As the days get shorter (and grayer) and the sun becomes a memory of the distant past, the most important step to staying safe is to become as obvious as possible to passing cars (and deer if you live anywhere near me). Be sure to wear reflective clothing, a headlamp, reflective vest, blinking light, or whatever else you have to alert others of your presence.

2. LAYERS! Staying warm without bulk is all about the layers. The best way to stay warm is to make sure your bottom layer is non-cotton. Cotton absorbs moisture and doesn’t dry very quickly, therefore keeping your shirt wet and you cold. You want your clothing to have

moisture wicking material that will wick the sweat away from your body–keeping you dry and warm. Standard winter apparel to live by is a good base layer, some type of heavier long sleeve or 1/4 zip, and a lightweight jacket that will be water and wind proof.
–If you’re looking for a great base layer, come try our Craft base layers, made especially to keep your body dry and comfortable in cold conditions.

We will also be holding Craft layer demo nights Monday, December 12th at Pepper Pike, and Wednesday, December 14th, at Northfield(more info to come on this event soon!)

3. “UNDER” DRESS! A standard rule of thumb is to dress for 30 degrees warmer than the actual temperature outside. It seems pretty self-explanatory, but I know how hard it can be sometimes when you first step out that door and are instantly tempted to turn around for your winter coat. You should be a little chilly when you first step out the door–and nice and toasty as you’re headed home. It helps to warm-up beforehand. A few jumping jacks, crunches, sprints up and down the stairs, or anything to get that blood flowing will cut back on the initial chill.

4. ACCESSORIZE! It’s amazing what a good pair of gloves can do. As we all know we lose most of our heat through our hands and heads, so keeping those warm will do wonders for your overall body temperature. I have a great pair of Under Armour gloves that

do the trick, but I have my eye on the Mizuno Breath Thermo Windshell gloves we recently got in at Pepper Pike. These gloves are made with a thermal material that absorbs moisture from the body to generate heat. AKA as you sweat or blow on your hands, the gloves warm up! They also have a wind resistant shell. Mizuno also has a hat made with this same material. Ladies with pony tails–don’t forget your ear warmers!

5. NEW SHOES? Some people swear by Gortex or Water Resistant running shoes for winter. Is it nice? Absolutely. Is it necessary? Nope. If you’re just running on roads, which are (usually) salted and plowed because Cleveland is no stranger to winter grooming–your normal running shoes should be just fine. Invest in a great pair of non-cotton socks that will ensure your feet stay as dry as possible. Smartwool socks are a GREAT option–moisture wicking and not scratchy I promise (the word wool makes me cringe as first too). We’re even getting in some fun holiday colors this season!

Don’t forget to STAY HYDRATED! Without the sun beating down against your skin and that classic Cleveland humidity reminding you how thirsty you are, it’s easy to forget one of the most important steps to happy running–WATER! Don’t forget to keep you and your muscles hydrated and happy this winter. Just because it’s cold doesn’t mean you don’t need water
